Andy Warhol Goes Arctic
ANDY WARHOL POSTERS
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was a painter, photographer and filmmaker who published magazines and books. He hosted his Factory studio and brought entertaining musicians and designs to the public. In the 1960–the 80s, and the 1980s, there were not many things happening in cultural life in New York City without Warhol’s involvement.
Warhol began his career as a graphic designer in the 1940s. His brochures and book illustrations were famous, and he presented them in his first exhibitions.
Posters are works designed by Andy Warhol, and he also supervised the printing process. The posters have been displayed since 1964 as part of Warhol’s art exhibitions. The exhibitions have toured galleries and museums around the world.
Like other American pop artists, Warhol also designed poster series to order. Warhol began designing posters for the New York City Centre of Performing Arts at Lincoln Center and the Paris Review. The wallpaper he printed in the early 1970s is a speciality. The most famous works made with silk printing technology on wallpaper are cows of different colours and wallpapers depicting the head of Chairman Mao.
The Warhol poster collection donated by collector Claus von der Osten to the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg is almost intact. Only ten posters of the original collection are missing. The poster exhibition has toured the world for years, but now is your last chance to see it for a while: after the Oulu exhibition, it will take a break for 15 years.
